Dear Grammar School Families,
I hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you of an important matter regarding the health and safety of our students at Winnemucca Grammar School. As you know, there was a water leak in the spring underneath the old building at Grammar. Since the leak, we have continued to experience problems with the flooring and called in a company from Reno to assess the damages and necessary next steps. During the inspection, air samples were taken, and it was discovered that there were elevated levels of Penicillium/Aspergillus in the air. AllPro returned Monday this week to do additional testing of the rest of the building and thankfully the rest of the school’s results were normal. We take this issue very seriously and want to assure you that we are taking immediate and thorough action to address the situation.
Here is what we are doing to ensure the safety of all students and staff:
-Assessment and Remediation: We have already contacted certified mold remediation specialists, who are conducting a detailed inspection and cleaning of the affected areas. Any materials that cannot be safely cleaned or remediated will be removed and replaced.
-Air Purification: ServiceMaster out of Reno has placed industrial size air scrubbers throughout the building, and have begun the process of purifying the air in the building and removing any contaminants. This has reduced levels significantly providing a safe environment for students and staff.
-Ongoing Monitoring: We will continue to monitor air quality and environmental conditions in all parts of the building, with regular follow-up assessments to ensure the situation is fully resolved.
-Health and Safety: The health and well-being of our students is our top priority. If your child has any respiratory concerns or sensitivities to mold or other allergens, please notify us so we can ensure appropriate accommodations are made. We encourage all families to consult with their healthcare provider if they have any concerns about potential health effects.
At this time, we do not anticipate a change to your child’s schedule on Monday. As we work to replace the floors that have warped, there may be a possibility that children will have alternate classrooms in the upcoming weeks, but we are waiting for additional information on which to create our full remediation plan. We will be in contact when more information is secured from the professionals.
We understand that this news may be concerning, but please know that we are committed to taking all necessary steps to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. We will keep you updated on our progress and will notify you once the remediation work has been completed.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the school office at 775-623-8160 or by email at cborowski@hcsdnv.com. Your child’s safety is our utmost priority, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work through this matter.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
-Chelsea Borowski
Principal

Good Evening Grammar School Parents,
In the Spring, we had a pipe burst below the floors of the Grammar school which caused significant flooding in the crawl space below the old building, in particular under the 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms. As the year has progressed, we have continued to see evidence of the moisture from this flood affecting areas of Grammar, including the hardwood floors in several classrooms.
This morning, to ensure the safety and integrity of the school, the district had an individual from AllPro in Reno on site to evaluate the damage from the flood, check for any lingering conditions due to water damage, and ensure that the building environment was healthy for staff and students. Throughout the day, the AllPro technician worked in the buildings and classrooms, and your children may come home and talk to you about it, as he had a variety of equipment that may be unfamiliar to them. The purpose of this message is to ensure that we keep you informed and be proactive in communication with you or your child.
As we receive additional information, we will continue to update you on any next steps we will be taking to resolve any concerns.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we respond to unexpected events, such as broken pipes, with our cherished building! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Chelsea Borowski at 775-421-1731.
