About Our Superintendent

Dr. David Jensen has made Winnemucca and Humboldt County School District his home for the past 20 years, with the past 10 years as either the Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent of Schools. As Superintendent, a strong effort has been placed in moving Humboldt County School District into the 21st century. This has required significant upgrades to an aging infrastructure, supported by overwhelming community support in the passage of a bond initiative in 2008, generating revenues of just over $1,000,000 annually to support district facilities with a median age of 58 years. In addition, Dr. Jensen has sought cost saving efforts as demonstrated through significant solar panel implementation. The 5.6-million-dollar project was largely funded (5.1 million) through an incentive provided by NV Energy. The cost savings are providing more than $150,000 annually which is redirected back toward student supports.

During his first years as Superintendent, aggressive goals were developed, with increased graduation rates over the next several years as the primary area of focus. The expected target is to have graduation rates well over 80% annually. In addition, goals are developed to facilitate a successful transition to the Nevada Academic Content Standards while providing critical time to allow staff to prepare for full implementation. This goal is demonstrated by a common late start each Thursday providing direct teacher professional development while ensuring that instructional time is held sacred.

Dr. Jensen is the immediate past president of the Nevada Association of School Superintendent’s (NASS) and was selected as the Nevada Superintendent of the Year for 2017. Dr. Jensen will be representing Humboldt County and Nevada during the AASA conference to be held in New Orleans in March of 2017. In addition, Dr. Jensen has served as a past president for the Winnemucca Rotary Club as well as being actively engaged in other local community groups.

He holds his Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administrative Certification from the University of Nevada, while his Bachelors, Masters' in Educational Psychology and School Psychology Specialist degrees are from Brigham Young University.
